Hidradenitis supprativa HS is a poorly understood skin condition that is believed to affect nearly twelve million people in the United States alone. Only a small fraction of those affected have been properly diagnosed, leaving. Tara Grant, a twenty-year sufferer of HS, has become an underground legend to her Internet community of HS victims by presenting a methodical, self-tested action plan to heal naturally. It was extremely painful, so painful that I couldn't sleep on that side of my head. After that one came another and another until it became a cluster of cyst's in the shape of a "C".
Some would drain and other's were hard to the touch. With the cyst's also came hair loss, so with my symptom's and the help of Google I came to the conclusion that I had postpartum alopecia. I went back to my dermatologist and he came to the same conclusion and decided to give me cortisteroids injections.
After the injections, I noticed some cyst's would shrink but some actually got bigger. He then decided to do a biopsy of the largest one, but the results came back to show nothing but inflammation. He had no other answer but to continue doing the injections but I wanted a second opinion. So, I went to see another dermatologist, who pretty much gave me the same treatment which included another biopsy but this time prescribed me an antibiotic and scalp cream. However, when she saw no improvement, she referred me to another dermatologist. By this time I was frustrated, disgusted, depressed, and almost broke from all the doctor visits, prescriptions and medical bills, but I took the referral and made my appointment.
I figured this doctor must have been amazing because I had to wait almost two month's to see him. Thankfully, during the time of waiting she had me on antibiotics and pain medication.
In the midst of everything that was already going on with my body. I noticed during the time of my menstrual cycle I would get large painful boils in my groin area, most times they were so bad that I couldn't walk.

Can you imagine that while trying to care for two kids?! My appointment couldn't come fast enough to say the least. Finally, the day for my appointment came, I arrived 45 minuets early and I don't think it lasted any longer then ten minuets. Other Editions 2. Friend Reviews. And, I'm not sure if it's because I lost interest or because it felt a little redundant, but I really didn't love this book nor did it really get me curious about trying a paleo lifestyle. I thought the sections about the basics of digestion and auto-immunity and digestion were pretty well done, and I liked the concept of I'm definitely more of a Starch Solution gal when it comes to my dietary choices, so I knew it would take some convincing to get me to love a book so focused on the paleo diet.
I thought the sections about the basics of digestion and auto-immunity and digestion were pretty well done, and I liked the concept of healing an auto-immune disorder with dietary changes -- so, in that sense, I guess the book was successful. Beyond that, it was just Mar 18, Brittany rated it it was amazing. The Hidden Plague is a great book for anyone suffering From HS, to give them a better understanding of what is going on with their bodies and an alternative way through diet to put your body in remission that is currently not recognized by many in the medical field.
Tara Grant is extremely thorough and backs up all of her claims and research, giving you little reason to not trust what she is saying. This is not your typical medical book, its user friendly and not only gives you the facts, it also provides other people's experiences and stories. The Hidden Plague is a worthy read for anyone suffering from HS or the parent of a teen suffering from it.

Dec 21, Michelelazzarotti rated it it was amazing. So good it should be translated to all languages! Extremely informative for those who suffer from HS. Apr 06, Dayna rated it liked it Shelves: food , self-help. An easily read book with lots of recommendations for about every major aspect of life to help deal with autoimmune diseases. Well researched, but at least half if not most are biased sources and heavily rely on one person Loren Cordain, founder of the Paleo movement. Some very good scientific explanations, although for many pieces, only one side of the story is given such that it helps make the case for the Paleo lifestyle.
The entire book is so biased in favor of a Paleo lifestyle I conside An easily read book with lots of recommendations for about every major aspect of life to help deal with autoimmune diseases. The entire book is so biased in favor of a Paleo lifestyle I considered giving it 2 starts, but since I did get some pointers in a number of areas, I went with 3 stars. Also, her entire argument relies on Leaky Gut Theory, which, while convincing and possibly correct, has yet to be proven by science - so take it with a grain of salt, and not as gospel.
She's no doctor, and she is the first to tell the reader this, but it does hurt her credibility a bit. View 1 comment. Oct 12, Lesya rated it liked it.

This book is very helpful, but put me to sleep every night after two pages. Definitely a valuable read for anyone learning about HS and autoimmune disorders as they relate to gut health. Reads like a blog with scientific terminology peppered in. I am a former researcher so that didn't bother me, but the pace and tone wasn't the best.
Incredible book. I'm looking forward to reading it again over the next couple of weeks and taking notes on all of the things I want to make sure I am doing write on my AIP journey.
